Nanoptek Corporation secures USD 4.7 Million in Series A Round

Nanoptek Corporation announced it has closed a USD 4.7 Million Series A equity financing round, led by The Quercus Trust, a California fund with multiple investments in clean technology and renewable energy. Ardour Capital Investments, LLC served as financial advisor in the transaction. Series A investors also included the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) and private investors. With this investment, Nanoptek expects to complete the development of its field-deployable Solar Hydrogen Generator, develop pilot manufacturing capability, and install the first pilot plant for producing carbon-free hydrogen. Most hydrogen is produced by steam methane reformation (SMR) of natural gas feedstock. In addition to consuming natural gas, the SMR process releases carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. Developed over 5 years with funding from NASA, DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences, and a SEED loan from MTC through the Renewable Energy Trust totaling over USD 1.3 Million, this bandgap engineering results in more efficient and lower-cost production of hydrogen from sunlight.

Academics butt heads over enterprise 2.0
Two business school academics who have disagreed over the viability of social networking in enterprises touched gloves during a Webcast debate. Andrew McAfee, an associate professor at Harvard Business School, is often associated with the phrase enterprise 2.0, and is bullish on the impact of wikis, blogs, and other Web 2.0-era software within a business context. In contrast, Tom Davenport, the presidents chair in information technology and management at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., has been skeptical of Web 2.0 softwares value on its own, and argues the functionality may not be all that new. Davenport also quibbled with the very phrase enterprise 2.0, calling it far too dramatic. The debates focus eventually turned to cultural barriers facing Web 2.0 adoption in enterprises, such as the ingrained reluctance company leaders may have over ceding some control over the flow and movement of business information.

W M gets USD 1.5 M for program, center

The College of William and Mary has received a USD 1.5 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to start a postdoctoral fellowship program and a center focusing on geographic information systems, or GIS, technology, university officials announced. The recent grant is the third that the Mellon Foundation, a private philanthropic institution, has provided to strengthen William and Marys environmental science and policy program. The first grant, in 2000, allowed the university to develop a minor, and eventually a major, in the subject, according to a statement issued by the university. The college plans to rely on private donors to raise the additional $1.6 million needed to complete the endowment of the postdoctoral program. Meanwhile, the college will use the remainder of the Mellon grant to fund a Center for Geospatial Analysis. The center will provide more resources for students and faculty to learn about and use the increasingly popular technology, which maps and organizes data and is used in a variety of occupations.

Frost Sullivan recognizes ShotSpotter, Inc. for its Innovative Gunshot location system that enhances public safety

In recognition of its efforts in addressing violent crime, Frost Sullivan presents ShotSpotter, Inc. with the 2007 North America Product Innovation Award. The Award highlights ShotSpotter for the development of its innovative Gunshot Location System (GLS). The technology uses acoustic triangulation to locate gunshots and notifies dispatchers and patrol officers within seconds of a gun being fired by displaying both the closest street address and a GIS map with a highly visible mark of where the incident occurred. Irresponsible firearm use is an increasing problem worldwide and ShotSpotter has been very successful at developing a proprietary technology that detects and locates gunshots in urban and war torn environments, says Frost Sullivan Research Analyst Krishnakumar Srinivasan. In addition to providing the exact location of gunfire events, the system captures the actual audio of gunfire events heard by its sensors. This information allows dispatchers and law enforcement officers to have invaluable situational awareness prior to arriving at the crime scene. A test conducted by the National Institute of Justice proved the ShotSpotter system to be effective and accurate and this is an endorsement to the performance capabilities of the system. Similarly, the FBI utilizes ShotSpotter by deploying its GLS in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies and police departments around the US as the fastest way to reduce gun related violence.

With Microsoft, firm brings interactivity to retail

Strorexperience is bringing interactive advertising and marketing to retail stores with assistance from Microsoft through two-dimensional bar code technology. This week at its annual convention and expo in New York, the National Retail Federation (NRF) tested the application, which took the Microsoft software partner two years to develop. Demonstrating the service, Microsoft and StoreXperience hosted The Great Product Hunt, a joint promotion in which NRF attendees had an option to capture product information from participating vendors and win prizes. NRF conference organizers also chose to use the application to provide more information on products being sold through the retail organizations annual silent auction. The application is easy to download onto a mobile device, and it provides updates on specific products throughout the day. Consumers send a short SMS code from their mobile phones to participate in the treasure hunt. In return, the consumers receive an SMS message with a link that lets them download the application onto the mobile phone. After downloading the software application, consumers can scan two-dimensional bar codes known as 2D Data Matrix tags with their phones cameras while they shop, receiving product information supplied by participating retailers and brands. The tags are black-and-white squares arranged in a pattern.

BEA deal makes Oracle a middleware powerhouse

Oracles planned USD 8.5 billion acquisition of BEA Systems, would push the company to the forefront of the lucrative market for software that helps major corporations tie together key business processes while running highly connected computing operations. Oracle, known mostly for its database software and the ERP systems it acquired from PeopleSoft, has on its own struggled to deliver a middleware platform for business process management and integrated, service-oriented architectures. An ambitious internal project called Fusion that aims to develop such software has suffered numerous setbacks and delays since Oracle launched the effort in 2005. The addition of BEA technology to Fusion should put the project back on track, analysts say. BEA customers can continue to use their existing BEA products going forward, or choose to use Oracle and BEA products as part of the ongoing evolution of Fusion Middleware. Oracle would also continue development of versions of BEA products that run on databases other than those made by Oracle, such as IBMs DB2 database.
